In today‘s lesson I’m going to show you ten ways to use the word “ alright” 。

我們今天的課程是要告訴你10種“alright”的用法。

Let‘s begin with some grammar， because there are difference between British English and American English in whether you’re writing the word “ alright” 。

我們先從語法上看一下，英式英語和美式英語在“alright”的寫法上就有不一樣的地方。

So， in American English， their preference is to write “ all right” as two words。

在美式英語中，通常是寫作“all right”兩個詞。

That‘s considered more grammatically correct。

這樣從語法上更正確。

In British English， it depends。

在英式英語中，是依情況而定。

Some people say it should always be written as two words， and some people it’s now acceptable to write “ alright” as one word。

一些人說應該寫成兩個詞“all right”，但是另外一些人也說寫成“alright”也是對的。

Personally， I generally write the word as one word。

我個人更偏向於寫成一個詞。

I write it like this。

我這樣寫。

And that is because I consider it quite an informal expression， and most of the time I use it， it feels to me that it has an informal register。

我這樣做的原因是我認為這種表達更隨意，不是很正式，我這樣用得越多，越覺得這個詞是可以很隨意地使用。

But if you wanted to be really， really certain that you weren‘t making a grammatical mistake， if you’re writing something formal， then you can spell it two words in British English。

但是如果你真的，真的不想犯語法錯誤，再如果你寫的東西比較正式，那麼你就按照英式英語，把它分成兩個詞來寫吧。

Okay， let‘s move now to examples of when we use this word： “ alright” 。

好，我們現在開始看看如何使用這個詞：“alright”。

What’s important to know about this word is it has different meanings， depending on how。 。 。 On the tone that we use when we say it。

這個詞的重要意義在於，這個詞有很多意思，不同的意思取決於我們在讀這個詞時候的語調。

Let‘s start with here。

我們就從這裡開始。

Number one， when we want to reassure someone we can say： “ Everything’s going to be alright。 Don‘t worry， everything’s going to be alright” 。

第一點，當我們想向某人確認什麼事情時，我們會說：“所有的事情都會安排好。放心，都已經安排好了。”

That‘s also a song。 Do you know it？

這是首歌曲。 你知道嗎？

“ Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” 。

Number two we can use the word “ alright” to check： Is something satisfactory？

第二點，我們也可以用“alright”來確認：某事是否令人滿意？

That means： Is it okay？

這就是說：這樣就可以了嗎？

I want to check that the thing I want to do is okay。

我想要確認我想要做的事情是對的。

I can say： “ Does this soup taste all right？ I want you to tell me。 Is it delicious？ Does the soup taste all right” ？

我就可以說：“這碗湯好喝麼？”我希望你告訴我，湯好喝麼？這碗湯嚐起來味道是不是還不錯？

Perhaps I’m going out for the evening， I‘m not sure what to wear。

可能我晚上要出門， 我不知道該穿什麼。

So I try on my dress and I ask you： “ Is my dress alright？ Do you think it’s alright for the party” ？

所以我穿上衣服然後問你：“我這件衣服怎麼樣？你覺得和今晚的聚會相配麼？”

Number three， we say the word “ all right” when we‘re asking people about their health。

第三點，在問到別人身體健康問題的時候，我們會用“alright”。

Perhaps they’ve not been well lately， so we can say： “ Are you all right” ？ We can also say that。 。 。

可能他們最近不是很好，所以我們可以說：“你覺得怎麼樣？我們也可以說……

If this would normally happen if you‘re walking in the street and somebody falls over， maybe they slip because the pavement’s wet or they have a bicycle accident， you can say to them： ” Are you all right？ Are you all right“ ？ And when we say it fast，

如果你走在街上，有人因為路邊太滑而摔倒或者是被腳踏車撞到了，你可以對他們說：”你還好嗎？“”你還好嗎？“我們這時候會說得很快，

then it all blends into one： ” Are you all right？ Are you all right“ ？

Next we have permission。

下一個是我們要獲得許可的時候，可以用到這個詞。

If you want to sit down somewhere and you‘re not sure if somebody’s already sitting there， you can politely say： ” Is it alright if I sit here？ Is it alright“ ？

如果你想要坐下，但是你不確認是不是有人坐在這裡，你可以說：”我可以坐這裡嗎？“”我可以嗎？“

And they will say： ” Yeah， sure。 Sit down“ 。

然後他們會說：”可以的。請坐吧。“

My next examples are mainly British English examples， and these are informal expressions， things we would say when we‘re just chatting in conversation。

我下面的例子多是英式英語的例子，基本上都是非正式的表達，都是我們在日常對話中能用到的。

So， here I have spelt ” alright“ as one word every time。

所以，我下面都會用”alright“。

In my previous examples I spelt it two ways to show： Yes， this is possible， and this is also possible； depends on your preference。

在我先前的例子裡，我用兩種方式來表明：是的，這樣是可以的，這樣也是可以的，隨你的喜好。

So， number five， in British English in London specifically， but many other areas， especially in the south of England， we can use ” alright“ as a greeting。

所以，第五點，在英式英語裡，尤其是在倫敦，但是在很多其他區域，尤其是在英格蘭南方，我們用”alright“來打招呼。

So instead of saying： ” Hello。 How are you“ ？ we just say to each other： ” Alright“ ？ And then they say： ” Alright“ 。 We don’t really put a lot of enthusiasm in it。

所以我們不會像以前那樣說：”Hello。 How are you“？而是說”Alright“？然後他們就會說：”Alright。“我們在說這句話時沒太多感情色彩。

” Alright“ ？ ” Alright“ 。

So the first ” alright“ sounds like more of a question。 ” Alright“ ？

And it depends， the other one sometimes doesn‘t sound like a question。 ” Alright？ Alright“ ？

But they might do the question-sounding one back as well。

” Alright“ 。 ” Alright“ 。

It depends。

Then you can also add ” mate“ or ” love“ ； very， very informal and very familiar kind of language to use。

當你在後面加上了”mate“後者”love“的時候，可以說在語言應用中是一種非常非常不正式的說法。

A lot of people don’t like to be called ” mate“ or ” love“ if they don‘t actually know you。

如果人家和你不熟，是非常不喜歡被稱作”mate“和”love“的。

Some people think it’s impolite。

一些人認為這樣的說法不禮貌。

So you could say： ” Alright， mate“ ？ Or you could say： ” Alright， love“ ？

所以你可以說：”夥計，你好嗎？“或者說：”親愛的，你好嗎？“

Next we‘ve got when you say yes to something but you don’t really mean it， you would rather say no， but you don‘t feel it’s possible。

當你嘴裡說的是肯定的答案，但是其實你的本意是否定的時候，因為你知道說”不“起不到什麼作用。

So imagine your mom says to you： ” Go and tidy your room“ ， or： ” Can you tidy your room today“ ？ You‘d say： ” Alright“ 。 Or you’d say： ” Alright“ 。

比如你媽媽跟你說：”收拾下你的屋子。“或者：”你今天能收拾下屋子嗎？“你會說：”好的“或者說：”沒問題。“

You‘re saying yes， you’d rather not do it today， but you don‘t have a choice。

你雖然答應了，但是你並不想今天做，但是你沒別的選擇。

So it’s not like： ” Yes“ ！ It‘s not enthusiastic。

所以這個就不像：”好噠！“你的回答是沒有激情的。

Number seven is when somebody says something that’s a bit random， like it doesn‘t really make sense or it’s a bit weird， something that‘s random is hard to describe， but teenagers

第七點，當人們說的事情不重要，比較隨便的時候，

find everything random。

比如聽起來比較荒唐，或者有點兒詭異，有些事情不知道該怎麼形容，但是年輕人知道能看出來的那種亂七八糟的感覺。

” Oh my god， that’s so random。“ They always think things are weird or a bit embarrassing。

”我滴天，這真是亂七八糟的。“他們總覺得事情會比較詭異，或者有些尷尬。

So it‘s。 。 。

所以……

A teenager would never say this one。

年輕人不會這麼說。

A teenager would never say： ” Alrighty， then“ ！

年輕人不會說：”Alrighty，then“！

That comes from an old film called Ace Ventura： Pet Detective， and he would use that as a catch phrase。

這種說法在一部叫《神探飛機頭》的電影出現過：佩特偵探這個角色就會說這句臺詞。

The English version that we always used to say when I was at school is： ” Alright then。 That’s so random。 Alright“ 。

我在上學的時候經常會這麼說”好吧！太亂了，我去。“這樣的說法比較隨便。”

And you roll your eyes a bit to make it look like： “ I don‘t know what’s wrong with that person。 Alright then” 。

或者，你翻著白眼就像是在說：“我不知道那個人怎麼了。好吧。”

So I wonder because I was at school when we used to say it like that， and that film was the same kind of age， I

wondered if it came from the same phrase as the film。

因為那時我們都在學校，所以我們都會這麼說，那部電影也是在我們那個年齡出現的，我在想是不是這句話就是從那部電影裡傳開的。

Not sure， but yeah， you say that when。 。 。

不確定但是還可以的時候，你可以說，

It‘s like。 。 。

這個就像……

It’s not really a comeback，

這個不算是巧妙的回答。

it‘s just you don’t have something witty to say or something clever， but you‘re just showing that you think that person is， like， pathetic。

只是當你不知道該說什麼，或者說什麼更好的時候，但是你只是想表達你覺得那個人很可憐。

“ Alright then” 。 So it’s very teenagery。

“好吧”。所以，這種說法比較小孩子氣。

Next we have passive aggressive。

下面我們來說說消極且帶有攻擊性的說法。

Passive aggressive is when you‘re angry about something， but you’re not expressing it in the most direct way possible。

當你對某事感到憤怒，但是又不想表達得非常直接，

You can say。 。 。

你就可以說……

Imagine you‘re angry at Steve。

假設，你對Steve感到非常生氣。

He did something， you thought he was taking liberties with you。

他做了某件事，你覺得他冒犯了你。

You’re not happy about it， but you say to him： “ Alright， Steve。 Whatever， mate。 Alright， Steve。 Whatever， mate” 。

你不是很開心，你可以對他說：“就這樣吧，Steve。隨便你，夥計。”

There‘re more dismissive words in here。

這裡的說法就比較輕蔑。

Saying “ Whatever” is quite dismissive， and calling someone “ mate” when you’re angry at them is another way of。 。 。

“隨便”是一種相當輕蔑的說法，然後當你很生氣，用“夥計”來稱呼某人時，也是這樣的。

“ Mate” ， it‘s another dismissive way。

這也是一種輕蔑的表達方式。

If you put it all together， obviously it’s not alright， the situation。

如果你把這兩種表達放在了一起，那就是當下的情況確實不是很好了。

“ All right” ， the words themselves mean all right， mean good， but if we use them like this it actually means the opposite， it‘s not all right now。

“All right”，這兩個詞的本意是“好的”的意思，但是，我們如果這麼用的話，意思就是完全相反了，就是不好的意思了。

But it could mean I don’t want to argue with you now， I don‘t want to make a bigger deal now。

這個表示的意思是，我現在不想和你吵，但是也不想和你談更多的事情。

But we could also say the same sentence with a more angry tone， and then it wouldn’t be passive aggressive， it would just be aggressive。

但是有的時候，我們會用更憤怒的語氣來說同樣的句子，這樣一來，就不是消極攻擊性，而且純粹的攻擊性了。

It would be like： “ Alright， Steve。 Whatever， mate” 。 That would be aggressive。

就會像是這樣：“就這樣吧，Steve。隨便你，夥計。”這樣就很強硬了。

Number nine we can use it as an exclamation。

第九，我們可以用它來表示感嘆。

This would be something like： “ Alright！ Let‘s get going！ Alright， we’re done。 Come on” 。

這就會是這樣：“好滴！ 我們就這麼去吧！好滴，我們做完了。快點吧。”

And lastly， this one is a British English expression。

最後的這種是英式英語的表達方式。

When you think somebody‘s good looking， it can be a woman， it can be a man， when you think they’re good looking， you can say： “ He‘s a bit of alright” 。 Or you can say： “ She’s a bit of alright” 。

當你覺得某人很好看，可能你說的是個女的，也可能是個男的，當你覺得他們很好看的時候，你會說：“他有點好看”或者說：“她有點好看”。

So there， there we go。

We have different ways to use “ alright” that depend on the tone of voice。

These are all British English expressions that we use in informal situations。

Americans would also use this one， and sometimes number eight， and number nine。

And remember： Americans， if they were going to write it， they‘d do two words。
