我的男主角英文怎麼寫

今天和大家聊聊我深愛的英國老戲骨奈傑爾·霍桑（Nigel Hawthorne）。記得我之前的分享中提過，不少英美母語人士表示，在南非受過高等教育的人英語極好，比如奧斯卡影后查理茲·塞隆和著名女主播勞拉·羅根，而Nigel則是更好的例子——他就是憑藉令人咋舌的英語水平和幽默感聞名於世。他出生在英國，但從小就隨父母到了南非並在那裡接受教育，這些都在他唯一的自傳 Straight Face 裡有詳細描述。

下面是我的藏書實拍：

Nigel的代表作無疑是《是，大臣》/《是，首相》（Yes， Minister / Yes， Prime Minister）

這是我最喜歡的政治諷刺喜劇，每年都要重看幾遍。他在片中扮演的Sir Humphrey雖然是第二男主角，但風頭卻全面蓋過了男一號Paul Eddington。在各大評獎中，兩人無數次同時被提名，但得獎的永遠是Nigel。幾十年前的這部英劇曾經有多火，現在的觀眾也許無法想象，但時任首相撒切爾夫人都忍不住要出鏡客串，足見它的影響力。

Sir Humphrey大受歡迎的原因之一是他極為獨特的語言風格

超快的語速和無腦的長句讓那些以語言功底見長的英國政客都一頭霧水。下面這段是我看過無數遍的情節，Yes Minister第一集的重要時刻——“搞笑鐵三角”的第一次正式會面。Jim Hacker只是隨口問了一個問題，沒想到引來了Sir Humphrey的無解回覆……Nigel在晚年時回憶說，那些冗長的臺詞曾在全劇完結多年之後還在他腦中揮之不去，給他造成了不小的困擾。「提示：大家可以數一下他一共說了多少個“secretary”（秘書）。」

和熒屏上的牙尖嘴利截然相反，Nigel本人出奇的安靜和沉默，是一個感性而細膩的人，這點從他的文筆中就可以看出來。下面是自傳 Straight Face 的第一段，優美的語句讓人很難聯想到那個老頑童Hunphrey。

I came across a peacock butterfly battering its wings against the sitting room window。 They’re always finding their way into the house and for some reason seem unable to get out again using the same route in reverse。 I tried to catch it in my cupped hands but it kept avoiding me。 Finally I snared it and， using words of encouragement which I was quite sure it understood， took it to an open window and released it。 As it took off to freedom in the direction of the garden， a bird swooped down from nowhere and ate it。

這段話讀起來代入感極強，因為我們都有過這種經驗，而且用詞也十分到位，比如 my cupped hands。更讓人歎服的是這段話的戲劇性，一個小生命的經歷在無聲無息中遭遇了大反轉，最終沒能逃過殘酷的結局，像一部超微型溫馨驚悚劇。短短几句話，竟看得人呼吸加速，手心冒汗。而且沒有用任何難詞來炫技，這才是我想學的英語。

講完了這個故事之後，Nigel在第二段發表了自己的人生感悟。如果你對這段話也深有體會，可以把它抄下來貼在牆上，提醒自己永遠不要犯傻。

If I’ve learned anything in life it is that it’s never straightforward。 Nothing works out quite as it should or as you’d like it to。 When it comes to career or relationships， because we’re dealing not just with ourselves but with others， we don’t expect things to be plain-sailing。 We’d be very foolish if we did。

Nigel Hawthorne在Yes， Minister第一集中的一段“饒舌”表演，Sir Humphrey在一段話中連說了十幾個secretary（單複數都算在內）：

Well briefly， sir， I am the Permanent Under Secretary of State， known as the Permanent Secretary。 Woolley here is your Principal Private Secretary。 I too have a Principal Private Secretary and he is the Principal Private Secretary to the Permanent Secretary。 Directly responsible to me are ten Deputy Secretaries， 87 Under Secretaries and 219 Assistant Secretaries。 Directly responsible to the Principal Private Secretaries are plain Private Secretaries， and the Prime Minister will be appointing two Parliamentary Under-Secretaries and you will be appointing your own Parliamentary Private Secretary。

大家應該聽不少老師說過，英語中的“換詞”是高檔次的表現，所以考試中會出現大量“同義替換”，日常生活中也會出現所謂的“soft language”，等等，以避免重複用詞。所以，很多人可能會認為，像上面這種“重複重複再重複”的手法，是喜劇片臺詞的專屬文字遊戲。但其實在很多其它文學作品裡都有這樣的情況，特別是兒童文學和科幻小說，有時為了營造氣氛、快速描繪一個形象或場景，作者也會集中反覆使用同一個詞，以在短時間內給讀者留下深刻印象。

女作家弗朗西絲·霍奇森·伯內特（Frances Hodgson Burnett）的代表作《秘密花園》（The Secret Garden）是風靡全球的兒童文學名著。下面是我的藏書實拍：

在這本書的第一章 There Is No One Left 開頭，作者就採用了“重複”的手法來速寫故事的主角 Mary Lennox：

She had a little thin face and a little thin body， thin light hair and a sour expression。 Her hair was yellow， and her face was yellow because she had been born in India and had always been ill in one way or another。

第一句話使用了三個little，第二句話使用了兩個yellow，一個古怪的小女孩形象就印在了讀者腦中。如果你覺得重複的次數還不夠多，模式並不明顯，那麼我就再給你舉一個更典型的例子——英國著名童話女作家 Edith Nesbit 的科幻小說《魔法城市》（The Magic City）。我最早是在物理學家弗里曼·戴森（Freeman Dyson）的自傳 Disturbing The Universe 第一章中瞭解到這本書的。戴森說，《魔法城市》對他童年的世界觀形成起到了關鍵作用，引領他走上了科學研究的道路。

在這本書的第一章開頭，作者是這樣引出故事主角的：

Philip Haldane and his sister lived in a little red-roofed house in a little red-roofed town。 They had a little garden and a little balcony， and a little stable with a little pony in it—and a little cart for the pony to draw； a little canary hung in a little cage in the little bow-window， and the neat little servant kept everything as bright and clean as a little new pin。

一段話中重複使用了12個little，這個模式夠清晰了吧。其實這是個很有意思的現象，大家如果有興趣可以再去搜集一下類似的例子。
