全球球迷翹首以待的卡達世界盃終於開踢了，但對於學英語人而言，時不時糾結的是為啥play football的football為什麼沒有冠詞？

對中國學生而言，football就像上圖中那樣是個球，是個可數的noun。不是傳說可數名詞不能裸單麼？

Football確實可以做可數名詞，但play football中的football不是可數名詞。

想象一下play a football或play the football，場景應該是這樣：

因為老外看到冠詞（article）， 就想到了“物件”。“玩物件”就如同用手把玩相應的物件，就像下面這樣

這個肯定是不是play football所想表達的。play football是在很大的草坪上踢足球，足球這個物件在踢足球活動中很關鍵，但人們見到play football的構象是人在老大老大的足球場跑來跑去，並被球踢到對方的球面內，而不是真的把足球當成物件來玩。

如果你查柯林斯詞典（Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner‘s Dictionary）的football辭條，發現它有三條義項：

義項1：

Football

is a game played by two teams of eleven players using a round ball。 Players kick the ball to each other and try to score goals by kicking the ball into a large net。 （Football是一種由11名球員組成的兩隊，並用一個圓形球進行的比賽。球員們將球踢向對方，並透過將球踢進對方球門來得分。） ［英式英語］

義項2：

Football

is a game played by two teams of eleven players using an oval ball。 Players carry the ball in their hands or throw it to each other as they try to score goals that are called touchdowns。 （足球是一種由11名球員組成的兩隊使用橄欖球進行的比賽。球員們將球拿在手中，或者在試圖進球時將球拋給對方，這被稱為觸地得分。）［美式英語］

義項3：A football is a ball that is used for playing football。 （A football是用來踢足球的球。）

通常詞典都是按義項的熱度來排義項的，而不是按詞源演變的邏輯順序。也就是對母語為英語的人而言，football被解讀為“足球活動”比“足球物件”本身更為常用，因為普通人對“足球物件”的關注並沒有對“足球活動”關注程度高。

而且加了冠詞的play a football或play the football會把受話人的認知拉扯到玩足球物上，這顯然也不是“踢足球”想表達的目的。

只有violin， piano這類樂器。一方面樂器本身有足夠的體積（物件感很強），另一方面演奏時，樂器也不會隨選手在很大場地上飛來飛去，也就是演奏樂器是，樂器本身的存在感很強，所以play

the

piano/violin。

在柯林斯詞典對名詞piano也只有一條義項：A piano is a large musical instrument with a row of black and white keys。 （A piano 是一種帶有一排黑白鍵的大型樂器。）
