provide ，offer 和supply這三個詞都有“供應，提供”的意思，但是用法又不盡相同。它們經常出現在各種完形閱讀中，大家要多注意其用法區別。現舉例說明其如何運用（另附 afford，furnish 的用法）

1。provide v。 供應，提供

provide指有遠見，為應付意外、緊急情況等作好充分準備而“供給、提供”， 可用於provide sb。（with sth。）或provide sth。（for sb。）結構。

The restaurant provides free desserts for guests。這家餐廳為客人提供免費甜點。

They have already provided me with everything I need。他們已給我提供了所需要的一切。

We are here to provide a service for the public。我們來這裡是為公眾服務。

2。offer v。 提供；提出，提議；出價

offer側重表示“主動提出”“願意給予”，常用於offer sb。 sth。（offer sth。 to sb。）或offer to do sth。 結構，後不能接賓語從句。

offer sth 提出、提供、供應，

如：

The manager offered him a cigarette。經理拿了一支菸給他。

He offered me shelter。他給我提供了避難處。

She offered me a cup of tea。 她給我端了杯茶。

He offered to go instead of me。 他主動提出代替我去。

The kids offered to do the dishes。孩子們主動要求洗盤子。

They decided to offer the job to Jo。他們決定把這份工作給喬。

3。supply v。 供應，提供

supply通常指定期“供應”，強調替代或補充所需物品，尤指長時間地定期供應所需或想要之物，常用於

supply sth。 for/to sb。

supply sb。 with sth。

如：

Foreign governments supplied the rebels with arms。一些外國政府向反叛者提供武器。

Steel for this project was supplied by an international company。這個專案所用的鋼材由一家國際公司提供。

They were arrested for supplying counterfeit medicine to street vendors。他們因為向街頭小販提供假藥而被捕。

Cows supply us with milk。母牛供給我們牛奶。

We supply power to the five nearby towns。我們給附近的5個城鎮提供電力。

注 意： provide不如supply常用，有時它們可互換，可說provide/supply sb。 with sth。。

The bank provided/supplied him with a loan。 銀行為他提供了貸款。

We are here to provide/supply the public with a service。我們來這裡是為公眾服務。

4。 afford v。 ［正式］提供，給予

多指提供抽象的東西，可後接雙賓語。

如：

The room affords a fascinating sea view。這房間可以看到迷人的海景。

It afforded him the opportunity to communicate with his foreign peers。這給了他與外國的同齡人交流的機會。

5。 furnish v。 ［正式］提供，供應

既可指提供抽象的東西，又可指提供具體的東西。

如：

Will these new finds furnish more clues surrounding the case？這些新的發現是否會提供更多與案件有關的線索？

He was furnished with a list of local dealers。

他得到了一份當地經銷商的名單
