一、課文原文

Lesson 80 The Crystal Palace

Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the Crystal Palace， which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851。 The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world， for it was made of iron and glass。 It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it。 A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world。 There was also a great deal of machinery on display。 The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth‘s steam hammer。 Though in those days， travelling was not as easy as it is today， steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe。 On arriving in England， they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train。 There were six million visitors in all， and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges。 Later， the Crystal Palace was moved to South London。 It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936。

二、重點句型或語法

（一）同級比較

也叫原級比較，主要用來表示兩個人或物一樣得如何，其基本用法為：

A+ be + as + 形容詞 + as + B

A+ do + as + 副詞 + as + B

其中，A和B是比較物件，即跟誰比，而形容詞和副詞為比較內容，即比什麼。如：

The pen is as long as that one。

He runs as fast as Jack。

同級比較的否定結構為：

A+ be + not as / so + 形容詞 + as + B

A+ do + not as / so + 副詞 + as + B

如：

The pen is not as / so long as that one。

He does not run as / so fast as Jack。

（二）比較級

主要用來表示某人或某物比其他人或物更加如何，其基本用法為：

A+ be + more + 形容詞 + than + B

A+ do + more + 副詞 + than + B

其中，A和B是比較物件，即跟誰比，而形容詞和副詞為比較內容，即比什麼。如：

The pen is longer than that one。

He runs faster than Jack。

比較級的否定結構為：

A+ be + not more + 形容詞 + than + B

A+ do + not more + 副詞 + than + B

如：

The pen is not longer than that one。

He does not run faster than Jack。

（三）最高階

主要用來表示某人或某物最如何，其基本用法為：

A+ be + the most + 形容詞 + in / of / among + B

A+ do + the most + 副詞 + in / of / among + B

其中，A為比較物件，而B為比較範圍，形容詞和副詞為比較內容。如：

The pen is the longest among all those pens。

He runs the fastest in his class。

最高階的否定結構為：

A+ be + not the most + 形容詞 + in / of / among + B

A+ do + not the most + 副詞 + in / of / among + B

如：

The pen is not the longest among all those pens。

He does not run the fastest in his class。

（四）異同的表達

如果要比較人或物的異同，常見的表達方式有：

1、相同

如果要比較相同點，常見的方式有be the same as或be like，如：

Our children go to the same school as theirs。

My new job is much the same as the old one。

The world is like a fleeting show。

2、相似

常見的表達相似點的方式有be similar to。如：

Their house is very similar to ours， but ours is bigger。

3、不同

常見的表達不同點的方式有be different from，如：

Our village is very different from what it was before。
